About Richard

Why I became a personal trainer (Highlight reel)

I became a personal trainer 35 years ago, soon after my dad passed away from cancer - at 61-years old. 6 years before that, my mum had also died of cancer at the young age of 53. When reflecting on how this happened, it became clear to me that it was strongly  driven by some very poor lifestyle choices.

That realisation has been one of the main drivers of my career. At 27 years of age, I decided to focus on helping others make health a priority in their lives. It’s a passion that’s only grown since, one that I want to pass on to all my clients.

Now, at 61, I’m armed with decades of experience and knowledge. I’ve seen every exercise routine and diet known to man and experimented with them all on myself!

I know what works and I can help you get the result you’re looking for in the shortest possible time.

At 15, I started lifting weights three days a week after school. The year was 1979. I was inspired by the classic bodybuilders of the era like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Frank Zane. I set about trying to transform my body - and within two years I’d made some quite dramatic changes.

In 1980 the owner of the gym asked me if I’d start teaching aerobic classes. I said ‘yes’ and so began my work in the fitness industry. I continued in both part-time and full-time roles for the next 11 years. Then, as I mentioned, in 1984 my mother passed away and  in 1991 my father followed her.

That was the moment that health became my career.

My purpose.

I’ve been doing it now for 35 years. I’ve done over 50,000 hours of personal training.

I just love helping people improve their health and vitality. Everyone’s path there is different, but with the right tailored master plan of exercise and diet, combined with strategies to improve stress management and sleep, you can get there.

The focus for me as I move through my 60s is different than when I started personal training in my 20s. Back then, it was more about body shape and peak fitness, whereas now I’m just as interested in incorporating proven strategies to optimise my longevity.

I know as I get older I want as much energy as possible. I want clarity of mind. I want to be active and able to participate in the things I love doing for as long as possible. And I’m not going to lie – I’d like to look good doing it!

That’s what I want for you too. I’d love the chance to inspire and guide you to live longer, healthier and happier.

If you want to be part of this adventure then let’s have some fun and train together. You won’t believe what you can do!
